use case

Generative Design

Generative design is a design exploration process. Designers or engineers input design goals into the generative design software, along with parameters such as performance or spatial requirements, materials, manufacturing methods, and cost constraints.

WSP Rail – Track Alignment Optimiser

Objective

Utilised to find the best railway alignment between two points, taking into consideration relevant project constraints such as environmentally sensitive locations or interfaces to existing roads, railways and waterways.

Approach

Utilising the coordinates and bearing of two points (e.g. Railway Stations), the tool will test millions of potential routes and assess them against a set of criteria, including cost estimates  using construction quantities such as earthworks volumes, retaining walls, viaducts and tunnels.

Galapagos Stostatic Optimisation Study

Objective

For a project in the UK we needed to articulate the ground profile on top of a sloped stepped slab.

Approach

We undertook a Galapagos Stostatic Optimisation Study to minimize the construction cost and material waste by optimising the placement and size selection of the voidformers to limit the lost/cut formers and limit the additional soil needed and loading on the structure below.
